Punjab Plans First Commercial Policy for Universities
Punjab is preparing its first commercial policy for universities, a step the provincial government says
will be taken after Cabinet approval. The policy is expected to give higher education institutions a
clearer framework for generating and managing revenue while maintaining their academic
responsibilities.
Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat also indicated that university funding would be increased
during the current year to help institutions facing financial pressure. Speaking at Punjab University,
he said stronger financial management and responsible public-private collaboration could support
student welfare and institutional development.
The proposed policy matters because many public universities are balancing rising operating costs
with pressure to improve laboratories, research, student services and campus infrastructure. A
commercial framework could create new revenue opportunities, but universities will also need
transparent rules to protect academic priorities.
Students and faculty should watch for the Cabinetapproved version, which will determine the policy’s final scope and safeguards.
